Dependability Is Not Unlimited Access

A professional rule to unlearn: value is not measured by how much you can carry. A reflection on boundaries, commitment, and responsibility.

What’s one professional rule I no longer believe in?

That the most valuable person in the room is the one who can carry the most.

For years, I thought being dependable meant being available.

Take the meeting.

Fix the problem.

Say yes.

Pick up what someone else dropped.

Absorb the pressure.

Keep going.

And if you could handle more?

Congratulations. You were given more.

We often reward capacity by consuming it.

The people who are competent, resilient, and willing become the people everyone leans on.

Eventually, being good at carrying things gets confused with being responsible for carrying everything.

I don’t believe that anymore.

▶️ Your value is not measured by how exhausted you are.

▶️Leadership is not martyrdom.

▶️Dependability is not unlimited access.

▶️Commitment is not self-abandonment.

▶️And a boundary does not make you less professional.

Sometimes the most responsible thing you can say is:

That is not mine to carry.

That might be one of the most important professional lessons I had to unlearn.
