Rebuilding Confidence After “You’re Too Sensitive”

A personal reflection on rebuilding self-trust after being told you are too sensitive: six things that helped Lynn, and three small ways to start trusting your own observations again.

"You're too sensitive."

Four words that did more damage to my confidence than any bad review ever did.

I heard some version of it for a long time. And I believed it. I turned myself down, second-guessed every reaction, and apologized for noticing things that were actually wrong.

Here's what rebuilding looked like for me:

1. Naming it. "Too sensitive" is often code for "please stop noticing."

2. Trusting my first read again. My gut was usually right. I'd been trained to ignore it.

3. Writing things down. Not to prove anything to anyone else. To prove it to me.

4. Finding people who said "that's not okay" instead of "that's just how it is."

5. Letting go of needing them to admit it. They probably won't.

6. Taking my sensitivity back. It's a big part of what made me good at leading people.

If you've heard it too: you noticed something real.

Confidence didn't come back all at once. It came back in small, stubborn pieces. Yours can too. Start here:

• Jot down what felt off, same day.

• Reality-check with one honest person.

• Practice saying "I see it differently." No apology.

What helped you start trusting yourself again?

I wrote about this in Book 6, You're Not Imagining It. Link in the first comment.
